Number One, Nobody

Malik Carter grew up dirt poor, training on a cracked outdoor court while his single mother worked three jobs to keep him fed, until an NBA scout secretly makes him the number one draft pick. But a month of sealed pre-draft testing leaves him unreachable, and his hometown assumes the worst: that he has been arrested. His own uncle, aunt, and cousin turn the whole church against him and his mother, stripping them of dignity, stealing from them, and even scalding her hand.
