Story summary
While test-baking early in the morning at the bakery, Chen He hears Mo Yuan humming a tune they often sang back when they ran a street stall, and only then realizes she has not made that very first savory bread in years. She tries to recreate it from memory but fails repeatedly; an old purchase order Mo Yuan finds reveals that the ingredient proportions had long been misremembered. Together, the two bake a batch close to the flavor of those days while also documenting their present adjustments; the familiar song brings back their starting point without demanding that their craft stop growing.
