Story summary
Ye Qing packs up her easel in the park at dusk and notices that Gu Yan has stayed by her side without looking at the painting. Assuming he was bored, she asks, only to learn he had simply had an utterly exhausting day. She does not press him to recount every detail. The two walk along a quiet path toward the exit and confirm how each is getting home. The sketch received no critique that evening, yet they preserved a moment together that demanded no performance of amusement, and saying goodnight became a way of granting each other permission to simply be quiet for a while.
