Story summary
Jiang Ning invites Cheng Yuan to ride the last bus to survey the neighborhood, intending to prove that nighttime business is declining, but Cheng Yuan suggests simultaneously recording the shops that remain open and the purposes of the passengers. Interviewing operators who voluntarily converse along the route, they find that desolation and bustle occur along different sections of the road. The final record preserves each situation without using a photograph of an empty street to summarize the entire city; this invitation also prompts Jiang Ning to reconsider the operating hours of his own shop.
