Stories

I wasn’t really expecting Sunday night to be busy like this, even though this is the most popular bar in town.

Coming here wasn’t my first idea, not since the hangover I woke up with after we went out on the town for my 40th a couple months ago…

But I must admit… they make an incredible espresso martini.

I let my attention wander around the room, observing the groups of people dotted across tabletops and tucked into booths.

“An old fashioned with… ah, yeah, Macallan would be gr-”

“Oh!”

I jump, turning as my frustration rises when someone bumps into my shoulder, sloshing half my martini onto the bar top.

I’m ready with a biting remark, but before I can open my mouth, the stranger speaks and–

“Sorry, apologies, I-”

He’s so handsome. The anger I felt before fizzles out and I feel my cheeks heat as he holds my stare, spilled drink forgotten when he grin and a dimple peeks out of his five o’clock shadow.

“No, it’s okay, it happens. It’s fine.”

I try not to think about how much I wanted that martini and shoot the handsome stranger a demure smile. I turn back to what’s left of my drink, ending the interaction as the bartender approaches him with the old fashioned he’d been ordering when he ran into me.

The plan was to have just one drink on the way home from dinner with a friend, to dull the Sunday Slump ahead of what I’m sure will be a stressful week…

“Hey, I uh- is this seat taken?”

I jump slightly, caught off guard when I turn to see the martini spiller is still there, expensive drink in one hand and a soft smile on his handsome face.

He’s young, I notice. Younger than his dark suit or drink choice would have you believe at first glance. But his suit’s tailored to the planes of his chest in a way I can’t help but appreciate as I turn my gaze toward him.

He’s staring at me, his expression open, patient and… a little amused.

“Looks empty to me.

”

My voice is flat, feigning disinterest, as I nod to the vacant seat next to me.

He grins at me as he swings his tall frame into the delicate bar stool. I smile back politely, but I’m more than a little confused about what he’s angling for.

“Well, I hope it’s alright with you if I change that, since I owe you a drink and all.

”

There’s something disarming about his lopsided grin. I can’t help but smile back.

“You don’t owe me a drink”

He leans closer, his gaze holding mine with so much intensity, that I can’t look away.

“But you’d like one, wouldn’t you?”

I open my mouth to speak but I’m at a loss for words. His boldness and that damn smile are just so unexpected…

So I just nod and lift my martini to my lips, feigning a nonchalance I definitely don’t feel.

He watches me with an appreciative gleam in his eyes as I sip, then swallow my drink once… then twice, for a little extra steadiness.

“Espresso Martini?”

He lifts a finger, signaling the bartender, and when he does I notice an expensive watch. It matches the crisp navy of his suit flawlessly.

He stands out in this place, that’s for sure.

Who is this guy?

“Thank you, yes. Another two of what? But you’d like one, wouldn’t you? she’s having please.

”

The bartender nods and walks away before I’ve even placed my glass back on the table, to try to refuse or even acknowledge the gesture.

He’s confident, that’s for sure.

Normally I find that kind of thing a little off-putting.

But there’s something about him that feels a little… warm.

I watch him for a moment, trying to decide if I want to be direct, maybe a little rude, or if I’ll try another tactic.

There’s no sense in wasting anyone’s time tonight.

I’m too old for these games.

So I arch a brow as the bartender sets the martinis in front of my new companion, who promptly passes one to me.

“Thank you. Now, what can I do for you?”

“Well, at the moment, I’d just like you to share these drinks with me, and a bit of your time.

”

I smile as politely as I can manage while question marks roll around inside my head.

He’s got to be joking, and I’m getting ready to say as much when he continues…

“I mean… a lady as lovely as yourself should never be left with an empty glass, right?”

“You’re not really flirting with a woman who is probably twice your age, are you?”

I’m flattered, actually. And the way he’s leaning into me, his cologne smells so good. But–

“Why not?”

He holds my gaze. He seems… so sure of himself. But there’s a softness to his features that makes me feel at ease, somehow.

His broad shoulders fill his suit out well, and a five o’clock shadow is faint but present across his throat as I take him in.

Short-cropped hair, styled neatly. No jewelry to be seen except for the watch. Full lips and the faint hint of a dimple in his chin.

He doesn’t shy away from my appraisal as I let my gaze fall to his hands, both holding the stem of his martini glass.

The flash of platinum from his watch catches my eye again and my next question leaves my lips before I can stop it.

“How old are you?”

If he’s surprised, he doesn’t show it as he holds my gaze, swallowing a mouthful of martini before he answers me.

“Old enough to know what I want.

”

“God help me, why is this working on me?”

He puts the glass to his lips but doesn’t take a sip. He’s watching me, while my eyes are locked on his lips.

“I’m 26.”

“Oh, honey, I’m too old for you.”

“Says who?”

“Look, I know from across the room you probably thought… well, I must have looked—

”

“Listen, thank you for the drink, but this isn’t going to work out.”

“I disagree.”

“You… what?”

“I disagree. In fact… I think this is going to work out really well.

For both of us.

”

Why is he so charming? And why is this actually working on me?

“I’m old enough to be your mother.”

“But you’re not.”

“But I could be.”

“But you’re definitely not.”

“You’re persistent.”

“And you’re beautiful.”

I take another sip of my drink to hide the flash of heat that just flared across my face.

I honestly can’t remember the last time a man called me beautiful.

“Thank you.”

Turning 40 has been… humbling. I’ve worked a long time to love who I am, even though sometimes it slips.

This… I don’t even know how to respond to some charming mid-20s guy flirting with me so brazenly, I—

“You’re blushing.”

“Maybe it’s just warm in here.”

“And you’re not wearing a ring… so you’re not married.

And we’ve established that you’re definitely not my mother.

Any other excuses you want to try?

”

Shit. What am I getting myself into?

“Fresh out of those, I think.”

“Good.”

He holds his glass out, clinking the rim against mine before raising the glass to his lips.

“Do you want to go somewhere quieter?

I’d love to get to know you better.

”

“Is that so?”

This can’t actually be happening. And even if it is, what he’s suggesting can’t actually happen… can it?

The excitement of being a little reckless and incredibly satisfied by those lips is too much to resist.

“If you come home with me, I promise you won’t regret it.”

“Oh god, does that line actually work on women your age?”

“Never tried it.

To be honest, this whole picking women up in bars thing isn’t really my style.”

“Oh really?”

“Really.

But I just… couldn’t help myself… when I saw you.”

There’s something about the way he’s leaning into me, the way his eyes are lingering on mine… the slight curl of his lips…

God, am I really falling for this?

He leans in a little closer, his lips just inches away from mine.

He’s waiting… luring me to him.

“You’re thinking about it.”

“You don’t know that… I could be thinking about…

Your job. What do you do for work?”

He pulls back a little.

Enough that the immediate need to have his lips all over me is temporarily absent.

“I’m a consultant.”
