[Gossip / dating] At midday on Oct 17, 2026, "Man pays 183,000 yuan in matchmaking fees, dates across three provinces in three days" entered Weibo's hot search list at #21. The matchmaking-contract dispute was settled on appeal by the Huangshi Intermediate People's Court in Hubei and reported by Legal Daily (Oct 16) and Dongchu Evening News (Oct 13). This recap sticks to those reports and keeps the people involved anonymous, as the reports do.

Three days, three provinces, one marriage certificate

According to Dongchu Evening News, in February 2025 a man from Yangxin, Hubei, under family pressure to marry, signed a two-year cross-province matchmaking deal with a local agency for 10,000 yuan. On March 1, escorted by agency staff, he went to Guiyang in Guizhou, paid a local dating company, and met three women that day, with no match. The next afternoon he was taken to Guangdong to meet a woman's "matchmaker," transferred 85,000 yuan to her that night, and met the woman. The following day he paid 148,000 yuan in bride price to the woman and her parents and registered the marriage in Guangdong the same day: three days from leaving home to getting the certificate. Legal Daily puts his total matchmaking fees at 183,000 yuan.

After the flash marriage

The reports say the couple soon fell out and a divorce dispute followed. When the agencies and the matchmaker refused to refund him, he sued.

The ruling

Per Dongchu Evening News, the court found the Yangxin agency's 10,000 yuan fee broadly matched its escort and coordination services, so that contract stood and he still owed a 7,000 yuan balance. The Guiyang company's 75,000 yuan fee was grossly out of line with what it actually did and violated public order and good morals; it must return 65,000 yuan, of which 58,000 goes to him and 7,000 covers the Yangxin balance. The Guangdong matchmaker, an individual with no licence to run a matchmaking business, charged 85,000 yuan for a brief introduction and was ordered to return 70,000 yuan. Legal Daily reports the refunds to him total 128,000 yuan. The appeal was dismissed and the ruling upheld.

The judge's warning

Matchmaking can be a paid service, the judge said, but fees must match the service, effort and results, and agencies must not exploit people's rush to marry by stacking charges or demand sky-high fees under "guaranteed marriage" promises.

Before you sign with a matchmaker

Read the service terms and price list, check that the agency is licensed, be wary of "married in days" or "guaranteed success" pitches, and keep records of every large transfer. Recent Chinese media reports have also flagged short-video "speed marriage" brokers advertising "certificate in 3 to 7 days" and "bride price in installments", which call for extra caution.
