### Chapter 2: Chapter 2

I wake slowly, my head foggy, a metallic taste coating my mouth. My teeth feel fuzzy, and my tongue is stuck to the roof of my mouth. I try to sit up, but I can’t move, my eyelids feel like they each weigh a ton. I hear a noise, like birds chirping. That’s strange; I never sleep with my windows open. I wonder why I can hear them so clearly.

Suddenly, a burning sensation starts flooding from my neck, racing through my veins. It consumes the brain fog, and I begin to feel my extremities. Now, though, I wish that I couldn’t, as the fire burns me from within. A strangled cry leaves my raw throat as my eyes begin to open. More of the birds’ songs trill as a bright light over top of me comes into view.

I turn my head to one side, trying to shield my eyes from the light. Across from me, a woman is strapped to a metal table. She’s struggling to get free. I can see the muscles in her neck straining. I blink several times, trying to understand what is going on when I hear more bird chirps to my right.

Dizzy, I slowly turn my head, facing the other way, and want to scream. Giant roadrunner-like creatures stand around another table. They are looking down at another woman, only she isn’t struggling. At least not any more. Her chest is opened up, blood dripping from the metal table to the floor. One the birds, chirping in a cacophony, peers into her chest. As I watch, one of the bird creatures lifts a feathered arm and pokes the woman’s face. Her head flops to the other side, away from me, in a sickening manner.

The dripping sound of blood hitting the metal floor makes me want to vomit. What on Earth is going on? A muffled cry comes from my left, and though I don’t want to see what’s happening, I turn my face toward the other woman.

On the far side is another of those bird creatures, only this one is holding a metal scalpel and is cutting away at her abdomen. I watch in horror as the thing cuts away at her flesh, flipping a large chunk out toward me. Organs and entrails follow, stacked grotesquely on her chest. I want to look away but I can’t. My horror rises as the bird creature stacks her organs on her chest. Her blood mixes with the sounds coming from my other side.

A chirp near me has me starting to thrash against the restraints that are holding me to the table. I can’t move much, but I hope it at least buys me some time. I don’t want to become some alien’s science project. Aliens? When the word hits my mind, my body freezes. Aliens. There is no doubt in my mind that that’s what these avian things are. Nothing on Earth looks like them.

Another chirp sounds directly next to my head, and I begin to flail against my restraints. Suddenly, there is a burning sensation in my neck, and everything fades from view. It’s fast acting, whatever they give me, because I don’t even have time to scream before succumbing to the darkness.

The burning sensation is back, coursing through my veins and burning me from the inside out. As it burns away the fog, I start to realize that something is different this time. My arms twitch and then move freely, and I bring my hands up to my face. They look like my hands, but the ceiling above me is different, and I hear a hushed voice and then someone leans over me.

“Hey, this one is alive, too!” The quiet whisperer comes into focus as a young girl, somewhere in her early twenties, leaning over me.

“Where…” I rasp, my throat too sore for much talking. Maybe that’s why we’re whispering.

“Shhh,” coos the girl with a short, black bob. “Don’t be too loud or they’ll come back. They aren’t happy when they have to come back.”

I try to sit up, and she grabs hold of my arms to help pull me into a sitting position. As I look around, I see that there are actually quite a few of us here, wherever here is.

The room is dimly lit, with no windows. Only a few lights are on, scattered around the walls, giving just enough light to see by. Everything is some kind of metal gray with white accents.

In a hushed tone, I try again. “Where are we?” I croak out.

A pretty blonde comes over to me and hands me some kind of bag. I tentatively reach for it as she smiles.

“Drink it slowly. We don’t have much left,” the blonde whispers. “Stay quiet so they don’t come back in. They dragged the last girl out. She hasn’t been back.”

I nod and look at the bag in my hands, trying to figure out how you drink from it. The first girl lays a hand on my arm and just pushes the bag up to my mouth.

"Just suck on it. I don’t know how it works,” she whispers to me and keeps pushing the bag toward my mouth.

I nod and do so, feeling the cool liquid flow down my parched throat. I stop sucking, expecting the liquid to keep flowing, but it stops. I suck again and the bag releases more liquid. Instead of pondering, I just take a few more sips and then push it away from my mouth.

“I’m okay now,” I tell the girl.

She nods and takes the bag from me, getting up to give it back to the blonde. I sit there by myself and look around. Several of the girls are crying, holding onto one another as they weep, silently. A girl with a bright pink pixie cut rocks silently in the corner, and a few girls sit with the blonde who brought me the drink.

I’m debating whether I should go talk to the blonde when the door opens and more of those bird things come in, some kind of gurney following behind them. They stop in front of us, chirping back and forth.

All the girls that were sitting closest to the door scoot further away, heading toward the back where I am. The aliens seem to be talking before one takes a long pole that has a loop on the end. It approaches the pink-haired girl. She tries to run, but it loops the end around her neck, pulling back. It must be electric, as her body locks up. She can’t even lift her arms to take it off her.

The alien pulls, dragging her toward the gurney, while another presses something on its side, lowering it level with the ground. One drags the pink-haired girl onto the gurney before they raise it. A zap and click sound, and binding strap her to the gurney. As they leave, the blonde bows her head, muttering a few words I don’t catch. When she looks up, there are tears in her eyes.

Slowly, I crawl over to her. She obviously knows more about what is going on than everyone else. I catch her eye when I am just a few feet away, and I motion for her to come closer.

“What’s going on?” I ask in a hushed tone.

She shakes her head. “I don’t know, you and her,” she says, pointing to one of the girls in a huddle crying, “are the only ones to come back.”

“How long have we been here, and where is here?”

She sighs deeply. “I don’t really know. I know they brought us three meals before you returned.”

“I was here before?” I try to search my memory, but all I remember is all the blood from the other girls.

She nods. “You don’t remember? You were like a mad cat attacking them. Do you remember your name? How many fingers am I holding up?”

I furrow my brow, trying to remember, but there is nothing. I look at her, knowing she’s holding up two fingers but not understanding why.

“I…I don’t remember anything except blood. Lots and lots of blood.” I cradle my head in my hands. “How can I not remember who I am?”

She puts a hand on my shoulder. I’m certain she’s showing empathy, but I don’t understand how I can know that but not remember what my name is.

“Maybe it will come back? Maybe whatever they gave you is still in your system,” she says with a hint of hopefulness. “You and Amber are the only ones to ever come back, but Amber was only here a few hours before they took her back.”

“You really don’t remember? You were right after me. I would guess several days ago, but there’s no real way to tell time. If they feed us three times a day, I would say…” She starts counting out her fingers. “Eight days ago.”

Eight days? I was here for seven full days before they took me back? Why can’t I remember any of this?

“Your name is Aurora, by the way. I’m Laura. You were trying to protect the smaller girl, Hannah. Seriously, none of this rings any bells?”

Again, I shake my head, my shoulders drooping in defeat. I have no memories, and it’s obvious that I should.

“Maybe you should try to rest? Maybe it’ll come back with time,” Laura says, trying to comfort me.

I nod and she points to the back wall. “They gave us a few blankets. There should still be some sitting back there.”

I rise slowly, swaying to the side, as if on unsteady ground. Laura reaches out, grabbing me, before I can topple over. She helps me back to the wall, also having some difficulty keeping her balance. At least it’s not another thing wrong with me.

I cocoon myself in a blanket, curling up against the wall. I find that even though I have just woken up, I’m still extremely tired. My eyes close, heavy-lidded, and I fall into a restless sleep.
